Tianjin University

Tianjin University, the first institution of higher learning in the history of modern Chinese which was founded in October, 1895, is one of the key universities of the country.

With a total floor space of 0.57 million sq.m., Tianjin University, covering an area of 1.5 million sq.m., lies on No.92 of Weijing Road, Nankai District. In the beautiful campus, the buildings and JingYe Lake formed a lovely landscape.

The predecessor of Tianjin University is Peiyang Western Knowledge School. During the Anti-Japanese War, Peiyang University merged with Peiping University, Peiping Teachers' University into the Northwest Associated University in Xi'an. After the war, Tianjin University moved back and resumed to Peiyang University.

Peiyang University changed its name to Tianjin University in September of 1951 after the Hebei Institute of Technology merged into it. The university comprises 21 departments, as well as the School of Graduate Students, the School of Management, the School of Petrochemistry, the School of Adult Education, the School of Vocational and Technical Education, and the Training Center of Advanced Project Management of State Education Commission.

The university offers 54 specialities for undergraduates, 64 specialities for Master graduate students, 22 specialities for doctoral students. And Tianjin University, the important center for teaching and scientific research of China, also has 4 centers for post-doctoral studies, 6 national priority fields of study and 4 national key laboratories.

Tianjin University owns advanced equipments and instruments used for teaching and scientific research. With a total floor space of 25.4 thousand sq.m., the university's library has a collection of 1.5 million volumes of books. The university archives have 500 square meters of floor buildings and a collection of over 49.8 thousand volumes.

In recent years, Tianjin University has achieved great success in scientific research. During the Seventh Five-Year Plan, 725 projects of Tianjin University was appraised, in which 323 items have won prize including one National Natural Science Award, 16 National Invention Award and 19 Award of National Science and Technology Progress.

Since 1980's, Tianjin University has established academic exchange and cooperation relations with some 40 universities in over ten countries and regions, including USA, Britain, Japan, German and Canada.
